Addiction, eating disorders, and mental health disorders are multifaceted issues characterised by a complex interplay of various contributing factors and driving forces. Addressing only the surface-level symptoms often leads to temporary sobriety or relief while still in primary care, with individuals quickly reverting to previous behaviours once returning to their everyday lives and challenges.

At Gladstones Clinic, our deep understanding of the intricacies of addiction and mental health disorders is backed by the expertise and commitment of our physicians and psychologists, who have devoted their careers to aiding individuals in overcoming these challenges. Over the course of more than two decades, we’ve developed and continuously refined personalised tretment programmes that are safe, effective, comprehensive, and permanent.

We’ve set ourselves apart as a premier rehab and mental health service provider by prioritising a personalised approach to treatment. We thoroughly assess each patient to create tailored treatment programmes based on their needs. This assessment allows our team to draw from dozens of clinically-proven modalities to provide the most effective clinical treatment options.

Types of therapy at Gladstones Clinic

At Gladstones Clinic, our therapies are grounded in evidence-based practices and are administered by experienced professionals. We offer a variety of therapies, each serving a specific purpose in rehabilitating and supporting mental health. From Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to Creative Therapy, our treatment modalities are designed to address not just the symptoms but the root causes of mental health and addiction issues. Below is an overview of some of the modalities in use at Gladstones, highlighting their role and effectiveness in rehabilitation and mental health treatment.

While each patient at Gladstones can expect to receive their own tailored treatment schedule, they will typically include many of the following treatments to varying degrees.

“There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn't.”

— John Green, American Author

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a cornerstone of psychological treatment at Gladstones Clinic and many other rehab and mental health clinics. CBT focuses on identifying and modifying negative thought patterns and behaviours and is highly effective in treating a range of disorders, including depression, anxiety, and addiction. CBT enables patients to break down negative thoughts and emotions into smaller, more manageable parts, allowing them to take control of their thoughts that negatively affect behaviour and emotion. This also helps patients to develop effective coping strategies and a more positive mindset, leading to lasting changes and improved mental health.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an extension of CBT and is particularly effective in treating personality disorders, self-harm behaviours, and emotional regulation issues, including mood disorders and anger management issues. DBT at Gladstones Clinic is applied in both individual and group therapy. It emphasises the development of skills like mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT is known for its focus on accepting uncomfortable thoughts and feelings while simultaneously working on changing harmful behaviors. Many of our patients, especially those struggling with compulsive self-harming behaviours, have credited their DBT sessions with helping them achieve long-term recovery.

Group therapy, another widely recognised and applied therapy within the context of rehab and mental health well-being, provides a supportive environment where individuals can share experiences and learn from each other. In these sessions, individuals come together under the guidance of a trained therapist to share their experiences, challenges, and successes, while at the same time building relationships and developing social and interpersonal skills. This collaborative environment fosters a sense of community and mutual support, crucial for those recovering from mental health issues or addiction. It’s a space of collective healing, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Gestalt Therapy guides individuals to actively focus on their current feelings and behaviours, encouraging a deeper understanding of how they interact with the world around them. It has shown remarkable results in helping individuals improve their self-esteem, a crucial aspect of mental health and well-being, as well as enhancing relationship dynamics. By learning to understand and articulate immediate needs and feelings more clearly, it promotes healthier and more honest interactions with each other. Gladstones Clinic employs Gestalt therapy to aid our patients in developing a stronger, more authentic sense of self and improving their overall quality of life and relationships with themselves and others.

Transactional analysis (TA) therapy is a powerful tool for helping patients develop social skills and relationships. It focuses heavily on communication patterns and personal dynamics that contribute to poor relationships, feelings of ‘not being heard and understood‘, and ultimately, social isolation and mental health problems. While not every patient will have TA as part of the treatment schedule at Gladstones Clinic, those who do typically find the experience extremely beneficial in developing healthy and sustainable social relationships.

Psychodynamic therapy takes an introspective approach to exploring the significant influences of past experiences and unconscious processes on an individual’s current behaviour and emotional state. This type of therapy is exceptionally effective at delving deeply into the psychological roots of trauma and emotional distress that affect current behaviours, thought patterns, and habits. By exploring these experiences, our therapists can help resolve complex and deep-seated emotional issues and behavioural patterns that contribute to addiction and a range of mental health problems.

It’s not uncommon to see patients struggle to believe in themselves or their ability to be happy after years of substance abuse or untreated mental health disorders. Motivational therapy is designed to counter low self-esteem and ignite a change in behaviour by boosting motivation and a commitment to change. Motivation therapy can be applied during one-on-one sessions but is particularly effective in group sessions where others’ successes and triumphs further boost its motivating effects. In cases where the patient is ambivilant towards recovery, it also helps provide the push needed to fully commit to long-term changes.

Creative therapies, overlapping with holistic therapy, include the use of creative expression of any kind as an alternative or supplement to verbal expression. This could include art, music, drama, or any other type of creative expression. Some patients find it hard to articulate their thoughts and emotions verbally, and the option to express themselves creatively provides not only an additional way of communicating with their therapy team but also helps to reduce stress and improve self-awareness and self-esteem.

Holistic therapy covers all therapies and techniques used to address the whole-being health of the individual. It includes the psychotherapies, nutritional therapy, recreational activities, and even downtime incorporated into addiction and mental health treatment programmes.
