It can be quite natural to feel low, sad or even depressed. We live in a fast-paced world full of pressure and anxiety. Most people have experienced anxiety or stress to some extent in their lives. However, normally these feelings pass. For many, these emotions are not a permanent feature of their everyday experiences.

However, for some individuals, these negative emotions can worsen and intensify over time. Sometimes these feelings can evolve into a debilitating mental health condition.

The term, ‘Mental health’ is often used to describe a person’s psychological condition and emotional well-being. Poor mental health issues can appear as the result of experiences in both our personal and working lives, or, like a physical illness, can just happen. Commonly diagnosed mental health issues include:

  • Depression, anxiety and panic attacks
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Phobias
  • Bipolar disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Borderline personality disorder

Poor mental health can affect how we feel, think and behave and, in some cases, seriously limit our ability to cope with relationships, work and life in general. Poor mental health can ultimately have a detrimental effect on a person’s wellbeing and quality of life.

An estimated 1 in 4 people in the UK experience a mental health problem each year, with 1 in 6 people experiencing one of the more common mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression or stress. Seeking professional mental health treatment can help overcome these disorders, bring relief, and signifcantly improve your quality of life.

Stress and mental health

There are many life situations that can cause stress. Some of the most common problems are:

  • New or chronic illnesses
  • Accidents
  • Personal relationship problems
  • Family issues
  • Changes in financial situation
  • Problems with housing
  • Changes at work

These situations are all linked by the fact that they are things we are unable to predict and control. When we encounter them our bodies trigger a response that puts us into a state of increased alertness. If these events happen repeatedly our bodies spend more time in this heightened sense of vigilance.

Remaining in a constant state of alertness can have a detrimental effect on a person’s mental health. Attention, memory, and dealing with emotions will all be harder to manage. This long-term stress can contribute to both physical and mental illnesses.

Someone who is stressed may feel:

  • Worried
  • Anxious
  • Nervous
  • Down
  • Unable to concentrate or make decisions
  • Irritable and angry

Experiencing chronic stress is often a precursor to developing problems with depression and anxiety. Lots of the emotional and behavioural symptoms of stress mix with mental health problems such as anxiety or depression. As the two are often linked, this can make it difficult to diagnose which one to treat first and if one is the cause or effect of the other.

Teens and mental health

It’s a common misconception that only adults struggle with addiction. Today, many teenagers have problems with obsessive compulsive disorders such as problems with gaming or gambling, sex addiction or smart phone addiction

All of the above will cause poor mental health for teenagers equally as much as adults. If you have a teenage son or daughter struggling with a behaviour disorder we can help.

We offer rehab for teenagers as-well as expert counselling and treatment programs.
