Anxiety disorder, sometimes referred to as Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD), is a mental health condition that causes a persistent sense of fear, worry, and nervousness that permeates every aspect of life. It can make seemingly normal, even mundane, tasks and responsibilities seem like insurmountable challenges, causing stress, tension, and apprehension. Anxiety disorder can make it difficult to maintain healthy social relationships, leading to isolation and, in turn, further anxiety. This, combined with constant feelings of worry over the future and dread about everyday activities, can cast a long shadow over an otherwise healthy and fulfilling life.

Anxiety disorder can take many forms. While some suffer from a general heightened sense of anxiety, others may have panic attacks due to specific phobias, such as large crowds or being in a confined space. Children sometimes display selective mutism, also classified as a form of anxiety disorder.

Gladstones Clinic recognises the unique challenges presented by anxiety disorder and offers specialised treatment tailored to address this condition. Our fully integrated residential anxiety disorder rehab treatment programme delves deep into the underlying factors such as trauma, environmental stressors, and genetic predisposition to mental health disorders. Our medically supervised programme provides a supportive environment that aims to help our patients understand their anxiety and build a robust and effective repertoire of strategies to deal with fear and anxiety.

What causes anxiety disorder?

The exact causes of anxiety disorder aren’t fully understood at this point; however, researchers have found strong links between it and a genetic predisposition to mental health disorders. Those with immediate family members who suffer from anxiety, or panic attacks, and other mental health disorders are at higher risk of developing anxiety disorders in their lifetime.

Non-genetic factors that might contribute to the development of anxiety disorder include trauma, substance abuse and withdrawal, and medical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and thyroid problems.

When to seek treatment for anxiety disorder?

Anxiety disorder has the potential to seriously impact your life in a number of ways. Beyond unnecessary stress and anxiety, it can also lead to depression (which often occurs alongside anxiety disorder), insomnia, substance misuse, social isolation, trouble meeting daily responsibilities at home, school, or work, and in the worst-case scenarios, thoughts of death and suicide.

If you or a loved one displays any of these signs of anxiety disorder, please consider contacting Gladstones Clinic for a discussion on how we can help you shake the fears that hold you back from a productive and fulfilling life.

What happens in anxiety disorder treatment?

1. Assessment & Personalised Treatment Plan

Effective anxiety disorder rehab treatment requires an integrative approach that addresses all contributing factors. Simply treating the symptoms of anxiety disorder might provide temporary relief, but it will not stand the test of time. At Gladstones Clinic, we begin with a comprehensive assessment of your unique situation before initiating primary treatment. This ensures that our mental health services for anxiety disorder are tailored, targeted, and effective in the long run.

2. Behavioural Therapies

Behavioural therapies that empower individuals to take control of their thoughts and emotions are key to long-term success in the fight against anxiety disorder. While we employ several clinically-backed psychological treatments based on each patient’s needs, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is generally considered the gold standard in helping people understand their condition and develop effective and personalised coping strategies. Other therapies, like DBT and group therapy, have also proven invaluable in helping our patients develop an awareness of how thoughts dictate emotions.

3. Addressing Underlying Issues

Patients with anxiety disorder very often live with other co-existing and underlying conditions, with depression presenting in roughly 60% of our anxiety patients. Identifying and addressing this and other underlying mental health and behavioural issues, such as low self-esteem and/or substance misuse, lays the foundation for effective long-term rehab and a life lived in peace, calm, and confidence.

4. Aftercare and Ongoing Support

Gladstones Clinic is fully committed to your long-term recovery from anxiety disorder. We understand that people recover at a different pace and have put a number of post-treatment programmes in place to provide continued support, access to therapy, and access to a growing community of supporting and motivating individuals. With Gladstones Clinic as your partner in recovery, there is always support at hand when you’re feeling vulnerable or need an understanding ear.
