One-on-one therapy, adaptable in its techniques and methods, stands as one of the cornerstones in the world of substance abuse rehabilitation. It offers a personalised and confidential space for individuals to navigate their way to recovery by giving them the opportunity to delve deeply into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours – an opportunity afforded at few other times and settings, especially while in the grip of physical addiction.

By working closely with skilled therapists and psychologists who specialise in addiction recovery, our patients in one-on-one therapy have the chance to uncover the root causes of their addictions and behaviours while also revealing and working on co-occurring mental health problems or dysfunctions. Gladstones therapists operate at the highest level of professionalism, ensuring safe, responsible, and confidential therapy aimed at laying a strong foundation for ongoing recovery and sustained well-being.

One-on-one therapy at Gladstones

What can I expect from my therapist at Gladstones Clinic?

One-on-one therapy, sometimes referred to as individual counselling or private therapy, involves engaging in deep and highly personal conversations with extensively trained psychologists and therapists. Depending on the scope of your addiction, eating disorder, or mental health disorder, your therapists may use a combination of widely recognised and extensively studied therapy models to facilitate a number of goals throughout your treatment journey.

During the early phases of your treatment, immediately post-admission and detox, your therapist will prioritise building a supportive and trusting rapport, creating the space for confidential and candid dialogue to take place. After your therapist has guided you through detox –the most uncomfortable part of rehab– this openness and rapport will translate into a healthy patient-therapist relationship where mutual trust and honest communication are used to explore the roots of your addiction and develop individual strategies for long-term recovery and post-rehab life.

"One of the cardinal features of cognitive therapy is that it stubbornly refuses to buy into your sense of worthlessness."

— DAVID D. BURNS, AMERICAN AUTHOR AND PSYCHIATRIST

How will one-on-one therapy help me to recover?

There’s no way to summarise the benefits of one-on-one therapy in a single word or sentence. Its goals are complex and multifaceted, and with the large array of approaches that one-on-one therapy lends itself to, it’s best to break down the benefits into individual categories.

One-on-one therapy allows for full personalisation of recovery strategies and treatment schedules – options that group or family therapy settings may not offer.

This means the freedom to adapt your therapy based on your needs and responses, rather than sticking to a predetermined plan. It’s important to acknowledge that even patients who share similar health concerns, including addiction, eating disorders, or mental health disorders, might respond vastly differently to identical treatments. In the world of addiction and mental health disorders, the ability to provide individualised care is crucial to achieving successful outcomes.

One-on-one therapy at Gladstones places a heavy emphasis on developing the critical skills that support a fulfilling life post-rehab. The ability and strength to deal with life’s challenges – be it in the form of relapse triggers, workplace stress, or relationship dynamics – and the clear communication skills needed to express ourselves to loved ones are indespensable. These skills enhance our day-to-day functionality and make it much easier to stay drug-free, healthy, and happy in the long run.

Successful rehab is transformative, and transformation can be challenging. The patient-therapist relationship you form during this period will act as an anchor point – a pillar of emotional support during a time of great turbulence. Continuous and sincere support not only underpins emotional healing and wellness but also acts as solid base on which to build resilience as you navigate your journey to recovery.

Extended battles with substance abuse and mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety can leave you feeling disconnected from your passions and aspirations. One-on-one therapy can help illuminate what is important to you and nurture the hightened sense of self-awareness that is so important to achieving self-fulfilment and a rich, full life.

Private therapy is governed by a strong commitment to confidentiality agreements, ensuring that your personal thoughts and experiences remain protected. This strict code of confidentiality guarantees a safe space for vulnerability and trust as you work towards recovery. Your therapist is obligated not to share anything you confide with others (other than what is critical information to your recovery team) and will not bring up what is said in private during group therapy sessions.

We understand that commiting to therapy can be a daunting task

If you have any questions about what to expect from one-on-one therapy, the logistics of therapy, our therapeutic models, or just need some assurance that everything will be OK, don’t hesitate to call us for an open and obligation-free discussion of your needs.
