Alcohol – The Scale of the Problem

Alcohol – The Scale of the Problem

Alcohol Dependency is a disease that can easily become life threatening. The characteristic that usually defines alcohol abuse,  or alcoholism, is that the problem drinker has lost control of their use and may repeatedly drink more than intended. They do this despite the undeniable social and health problems that result.

A key symptom of alcoholism is an inability to curb or amend drinking behaviours. That means people with alcoholism may want to change, but they may feel as though they’re simply unable to do so. Sometimes, they may feel as though they’ll just never get sober, because it’s not possible for them.

An estimated 76.3 million people worldwide have alcohol use disorders, and these account for 1.8 million deaths each year.

In the UK for the period 2019-20 there were over 1.3 million hospital admissions related to alcohol.

In 2020 there were 8,974 deaths directly attributable to alcohol and 21,512 where alcohol was a contributing factor.

Alcoholism is certainly serious, but it’s also manageable. People with this condition can get the medical and psychological support they need to change their drinking patterns and their lives, and that work can start right now.
