Eating disorders are progressive and debilitating mental health conditions that can affect people of every occupation and status. Gladstones provides integrative, specialist treatment for eating disorders including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, orthorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder, obesity and other eating disorders not otherwise specified, whether the problem be mild or very serious. Eating abnormalities and weight control behaviours left to continue over time can cause serious nutritional imbalances and are potentially life-threatening. To put things in perspective, Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder.

You’re in Safe Hands

Our supportive team at Gladstones will discover and help you manage the deeper reasons causing your Eating Disorder to manifest. The dieting, fasting, purging, laxative abuse, slimming pills and compulsive exercises are just a symptom of the underlying thought processes that are causing the disorder. By conducting a total body wellness assessment Gladstones will determine the best treatment for the specific individual needs of every client.

In order to recover completely from an eating disorder a person must be healthy mentally on many different levels. This involves a number of aspects; behavioural, psychological, thought processes, having fulfillment and purpose, establishing appropriate boundaries with others, managing feelings around food and resolving shame about eating and body image among others.

Our experienced counselors and psychologists can construct a customised treatment plan to address these issues as well as the physical issues of the disorder. In some special cases a full medical team will work alongside our therapeutic team to ensure the most appropriate care response is available.

Our Approach to Food Disorders

Gladstones approach to treating eating disorders is adaptable, supportive and individually focused. We do not promote the force feeding of anorexia sufferers, unless in a medical emergency. Acceptance to our programme is subject to a thorough medical and psychological assessment. Clients who are dangerously underweight must gain approval from their treating doctors prior to commencing an intensive programme and most importantly be open to receiving our support and willing to commit to treatment.

Gladstones carefully selects its eating disorder treatment team. Our aim is to create a safe, comfortable, nurturing environment where healing can take place. Trust and rapport are crucial elements in the treatment of eating disorders and our program works on building both over the course of treatments. Drastic changes are not recommended initially, instead we collaborate with the patient to make sure they are improving at a comfortable and suitable pace.

Treatment Programme For Eating Disorders

The treatment programme will initially focus on stabilising the client’s health to a safe level. Following this we focus on dealing with the mental side of the illness. Our clients will be given access to a wide range of traditional and Complementary Therapies. The exact combinations will be tailored by our supportive treatment team according to the specific requirements of each client. Later in the program we will attempt to involve family members and significant others in the recovery, we find educating the family about eating disorders can assist in the aftercare program being more successful.

Our treatment staff will review the clients progress on a daily basis to ensure that the most appropriate clinical response is provided at all times.
