Mood Disorders Treatment Clinic

Anxiety is a normal human response when a person is faced with a stressful situation. It can cause you to experience a range of physical and psychological symptoms. Psychological reactions can include insomnia, feeling irritable, inability to concentrate, a fear you are going mad, and feeling out of control of your actions. Physical reactions you may experience include dry mouth, diarrhea, heart palpitations, nausea, sweating, shaking, tightness in your chest and needing to urinate more than usual. Your tendency to experience anxiety varies depending on your personal resilience, biochemistry and genetic predisposition.

Mild anxiety can be beneficial if you are someone who works better under pressure. However, when your anxiety persists long after the situation is resolved, is out of proportion to the given situation, or is so severe it interferes with your ability to get through everyday activities, it becomes an Anxiety Disorder and you may require professional help.

The Types of Anxiety Disorders We Treat:

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – is when you worry most of the time about things going wrong and these worries are irrational or excessive to the given situation. This disorder also may include panic attacks and certain phobias.
  • Panic Disorder (PD) – this disorder causes the sufferer to react with sudden and unpredictable episodes of panic. They can be brought on by something specific or for no apparent reason at all. Often those with panic disorder feel they are about to die or that something disastrous is about to occur.
  • Phobias – where people develop intense fears about particular objects or situations and are out of proportion to any real danger. Common phobias are fear of spiders, blood, injections, enclosed spaces, or heights.
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – where people may have intrusive and compelling thoughts which make them feel anxious. They experience repeated compulsions to perform elaborate rituals such as hand-washing, checking, rechecking and counting to keep the thoughts at bay. These rituals usually interfere with normal life and can be debilitating in extreme cases.

Depression

Depression is a surprisingly common mental disorder, characterized by persistent low-mood, low self-esteem, a feeling of overwhelming sadness, hopelessness, lethargy and increased risk of physical illnesses.

Various types of depression exist and corresponding treatments are available. Depression may be present alongside other conditions such as anxiety or drug and alcohol addiction, which will worsen if left untreated. Depression can become a disabling condition that adversely affects a person’s personal relationships, work or school life, sleeping and eating habits, and general health.

It is important for the condition to be properly assessed and intensive inpatient treatment may be necessary in cases where the person poses a significant risk of harm to themselves or others.

If you or someone you care about is exhibiting these symptoms it may be time for them to seek professional help:
  • persistent low mood
  • social withdrawal
  • loss of interest in once pleasurable activities
  • irritability and frustration
  • sensitivity to criticism
  • insomnia and sleep disturbances
  • withdrawal from work and study
  • slowing down of thoughts and actions
  • increased somatic complaints – fatigue, pain etc.
  • being reckless or taking unnecessary risks (e.g. driving fast or dangerously)
  • increasing drug and alcohol use
